ABSTRACT

When we arrived at Bow Street, I found that through the inquiries of the chief officer a young man named Clarke, who was related to little William, and, failing him, was heir-at-law to considerable property, had been brought up for examination, and was then in the office. When he saw Jones enter with me, he started as if he had seen a ghost or a demon; or, what is often little less appalling in criminal cases, an unexpected witness who can clearly testify to guilt.
