ABSTRACT

It was night-fall when I reached the shore, in the vicinity of the cliff where the smugglers were to rendezvous. I was quite alone, and wished to be so, that I might obtain as much personal reputation as possible, and have no other claimants besides Thady upon the reward, supposing I should be successful in the adventure. This was a consideration of some interest; for if Frampton and his party were to become sharers, it would leave but a sorry item for each, and poor Thady would stand a bad chance, after all, for the cabin upon which he had set his heart.
