ABSTRACT

The Lewis Collection letter of 1880, from an uncle to his nephew still in England, is interesting for the exchanged views of English politics: ‘You seem to be a strong conservative – the result of early training – but where would England be amongst nations now. if more liberal ideas had not brought about reform.’ They also pay attention to American politics. The United States presidential contest had begun, ‘and the papers are throwing Mud broadcast’. He predicts a victory of Hancock over Garfield, but was wrong.
