ABSTRACT

William Mellor was an English immigrant who became the Secretary of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture. Here he is writing to his relatives in Oldham, Lancashire, from where he presumably emigrated. He refers to himself and his wife, Marianne, as ‘the American wanderers’, and apologizes for their lack of correspondence. Most of the letter refers to their recent trip to Britain, where they were visiting the relatives they are now writing to. They leftOldham, visited Leeds, and then proceeded to see much of Britain and the Continent. This, then, gives us a good sense of the many successful British immigrants who returned to Britain to visit family and ‘see the old country’, many examples of which are also provided in the biographies included in this volume.
