ABSTRACT
Will Candler is introduced in Volume 3, and this final letter sees him experiencing the Civil War. His correspondent John Butler confidently predicts that the ‘attempt to break up a good government … will be put down’. Butler joined the Union Relief committee in part because his wife would not let him join the army. References to pro-Union talk in Baltimore give some idea of the tension that Candler must have sensed.
