ABSTRACT

The Abram Greenwood letter of 1819 is a rare surviving immigrant letter from Virginia. It is now almost six months since the date of his last Letter to his sister & as the period is rapidly approaching when he trusts he shall again revisit his home & native country he thought he would write his sister once more before his return. Writing to his sister, Greenwood describes his tour of New England and Lower Canada (much preferring the former to the latter, which is 'under the sway of priests') and expresses his hopes that his brother will join him, after he visits England and returns to Virginia. There is no appearance of freedom of feeling but only apathy & superstition. His intention to smuggle goods back to England, hoping that the customs house officers will not check his pockets, is especially interesting.
