ABSTRACT

The Rev. Ambrose Mayne was a man of confused emotions in these times. He regarded all men— Invaders and English alike—as children of the Lord who were behaving with abominable wickedness in resorting to force. He could see no difference between invasion and resistance; the one was as wicked as the other. Patriotism was not included in his list of virtues. In discussing the matter with anyone who was disposed to discuss it with him, he invariably pointed out that, although the Israelites invaded Palestine with the blessing of the Lord, there was not one word of praise, from one end of the Bible to the other, for the Philistines who resisted them.
