A WEEK after the New Bill was passed Karyl had an interview with William Masters, who was now completely under her domination. She managed him adroitly, playing cat to his mouse in the most tantalizing fashion, but she felt that the move she was about to make called upon all her resources. It had to be done boldly, or not at all. So she called on him at his private chambers in Pall Mall (his 141wife had a sumptuous house in Park Lane), and for the first time placed herself in his power so far as to be alone with him without chance of interference, unless from his man, whom he paid well to be silent and discreet.
