ABSTRACT

The next variety of locomotion to be considered is that within the crust of the earth; or, subterrane transit. The idea you had in the nineteenth century did not extend to more than simple mining for the sake of procuring certain minerals; you had no notion of utilising the solid rock and soil of the globe for any further purpose. True, you could tunnel your way through a mountain, and so open a passage for the railway, but you had not learnt from the mole how to burrow beneath the surface for the purposes of obtaining nutriment and place of residence.
