‘As you request it, I will relate the adventure,’ said Mr. M’Gregor, ‘though it militates against my arguments. I was on a visit in Galloway, 102 Scotland, at the farm-house of Netherla, with my family and some friends. A worthy clergyman of the neighbourhod one day asked me, whether I had ever observed any singular noises and appearances in the house? I told him we had at night. He said, the reason of his inquiry was, that the house was reputed to be haunted; and the last tenant had on that account quitted it. I thanked him for his information, and promised to be more attentive to the circumstance. Two young ladies from Kirkcudbright, 103 an officer of the navy, and an English clergyman, were at this time on a visit / in the house. They had often remarked the rocking of a cradle in the garret, and the noise of the feet of a human person walking up and down the stairs, sometimes for an hour’s continuance in the night. We posted ourselves near the garret, and when we heard the cradle rock, rushed up, and found it in motion, but nothing near it, or in any of the adjoining apartments.
