ABSTRACT

‘Serjeant M’Cormick had given me his last adieu, and turned aside his head, to hide the tears which suffused his eyes, and my swelling heart was labouring under almost insupportable agony, when the bars of my prison rattled, the door opened hastily, and the keeper rushed in to us, exclaiming, “Joy! joy! a reprieve! a reprieve!” This sudden reverse of fortune rendered me for some moments speechless, and you may judge of my transports, on learning that the royal clemency had been extended to me, and my punishment changed from death to transportation.’
