ABSTRACT

Whether the foregoing letter was calculated to open Mr. Thornton’s eyes, I leave the reader to determine. Child of prejudice as he was, he looked upon it without despairing; and unconvinced of his mistake, only determined, that the first violence of her feelings having subsided, and maiden pride stepping into support her, the note was quite as tender as he could expect. Her reference to Williams somewhat puzzled him, till at length he concluded that this was but an artifice suggested by little Cupid, and that Williams must be the medium, through which henceforth they were to correspond.
