ABSTRACT

When Doctor Evans arrived, he seemed much more inclined to satisfy his curiosity than to offer any assistance to his patient; and asked twenty questions of the maid servant, before he ascended the little stair-case to Dorothea's chamber; but from her he could only discover, that the lady was an entire stranger, and totally unconnected in that neighbourhood: when, therefore, on being introduced, he perceived she was both young and handsome, he very charitably decided within himself, that this must be one of a certain description of females, who, for a reason, which he expected in time to discover, had thought it proper to seek a temporary retirement from the world. /
