ABSTRACT

In September 1976, the "Great Helmsman" Chairman Mao passed away and the so-called Cultural Revolution, which had started in 1966 and ravaged the country for ten long years, finally ended. Private education made its debut in China during the Spring and Fall War period when the old court-run education fell apart. Confucius and educators of his time laid down the cornerstones of the Chinese educational edifice. They pronounced the goal of education to be the training of high-minded scholars who were "saints inside and kings outside" "gentleman scholars" whose sole purpose in life was to realize "Tao". High school students in China spend considerably less time on reading and writing compared with their counterparts of a century ago, the study of Chinese is supported by a significant number of class hours. In China changes are happening more rapidly and meet with greater acceptance than ever before.
