ABSTRACT

When organising a move the library manager must not only be thoroughly conversant with the policy, objectives, layout, stock and services of the old library, but must also possess a clear 'vision' of how these elements can be integrated to provide better services in the new premises. The move may be part of an overall organisational move, or a crucial factor in the re-organisation of other departments or functions. Whatever the reason, it is inevitable and must be viewed as a unique opportunity to review service provision and the organisation of collections. In keeping with current Japanese management theory, a move is generally characterised by a long planning period in preparation for a relatively short move. It is not uncommon for a two week move to have been planned for over a year. Publicity is a crucial component in the success of a library move.
