ABSTRACT

Moving a collection into a new empty space on a shelf-for-shelf basis is fairly straightforward, but if an overcrowded collection is to be re-arranged or collections merged, procedures will be more complicated. Some special libraries have chosen to use trollies as a temporary 'library' open to users. This has been found to be useful when it is impossible to close the library throughout the move. Many librarians and contractors prefer storage crates and regard them as cheaper and more flexible in the long run. Planning a library move involves estimating the time required for the relocation of all the various different elements of the service and putting these individual moves together in a logical, coherent and coordinated sequence so that services can recommence from the new premises as soon as is possible. Each library must decide the most appropriate way of moving depending upon local circumstances, resources and politics.
