ABSTRACT

The young software engineer would have - or could easily acquire - all the technical knowledge necessary to set up bulletin boards, create Web sites, and similar tasks. Hooking up a bulletin board or venturing into cyberspace through a well-organised, user-friendly Value-Added Networks requires little knowledge and probably only the addition of a modem to existing PC or Mac. Equally important would be tuned in to Net etiquette and be sensitive to what is acceptable behaviour in cyberspace. The computer is being switched on and pointed to cyberspace for information and interactivity as a preferred alternative to passively watching images on a television screen. An electronic shopping centre has staged the first Easter egg hunt in cyberspace, and tying in with actual real-life sea voyages and other adventures can pull in large audiences. The virtual round file in cyberspace is the inevitable repository of verbose, unfocused material, and freelance journalists have practical experience in avoiding that fate.
