ABSTRACT

This is the first of several essays included here that consider a modernist artist’s impact on postmodernity. One could compare it with the relation of Marcel Duchamp to the avant-gardism of Merce Cunningham (Chapter 9); the role of La Argentina in the advent of Butoh dance (Chapter 11), and the influence of Nijinsky and the late-nineteenth-century interest in hysteria on Bausch’s Tanztheater (Chapter 12). At the same time, the essay is the outcome of a performative experience with the Bauhaus dances, which distinguishes it from all the other essays here.
