ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the conversion of Arishima Takeo and the internal conflicts that led him to formally apostatize. It examines in full detail his deliberations on sin and the question of free will, and his explicit condemnation of the Calvinist doctrine of predestination. Primary sources covered in this chapter include his diary Kansōroku (A Record of My Thoughts), his novel Aru onna (A Certain Woman) and a number of critical essays that contain the rationale for his repudiation of Christianity.
