ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the preparation, characterization, and application of nanofluids as cutting fluids in machining. Case studies of two different methods of application, drop-by-drop and mist application, of cutting fluids in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) are presented. Nanofluids are suspensions of nanoparticles in a base fluid. Common base fluids include water, organic liquids, or oils. Cutting forces are used to determine the power consumed by machine tools and to design cutting tool and machine tool fixtures. Dynamometers are generally used to measure few orthogonal components of cutting forces. Drop-by-drop application of nano cutting fluid shows good improvement compared to dry machining/conventional cutting fluid for all measured responses. A similar effect was observed in reducing nodal cutting temperatures. Nanofluids reduced the temperatures compared to dry and conventional cutting fluids in turning. Mist application with nano cutting fluid shows significant improvement compared to conventional cutting fluid mist, flood cooling, and dry machining.
