ABSTRACT

The health and safety of brewery employees can easily become a secondary consideration to the pressures and expectations of beer production. All should have training on the correct procedures throughout their brewery and be encouraged to comment on specific potential problems that they have identified. This chapter outlines common risks encountered in all breweries, together with general strategies to manage those risks. The aim of health and safety is to maintain the health of everyone and to maintain and enhance the viability of the buildings such that staff and buildings work efficiently together. Individuals are vulnerable to muscle and joint stress from lifting, hearing Loss due to continued and/or excessive noise, potential respiratory problems, and nervous stresses. Soft tissue damage is usually an overuse injury. The hiring of an ergonomic specialist is the most efficient route to take to assess specific tasks and to recommend proper techniques to reduce/eliminate risks.
