ABSTRACT

Although some research has explored the impact of assistive technology (AT) on the device users, few studies have evaluated the impact of AT on caregivers, particularly informal, family ones. Most research in this area is cross-sectional and measures caregiving simply in terms of hours of care provided. This type of study design does not allow causation to be determined, and this metric does not provide an understanding of the physical demands and psychological burdens that are experienced by family caregivers. Using illustrative vignettes and a review of the literature, this chapter provides an overview of current empirical and conceptual knowledge on AT and human assistance, describes recent advances in measurement, and suggests future research in the field.
