ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the time dimension in operations planning of an organization, with focus on the operations at hand (daily, weekly, and monthly operations). The chapter does not discuss strategic scheduling, supply chain scheduling, or project scheduling (see Chapters 3 and 11). Here, the focus is on the day-to-day operations of a single organization. We think of the organization as a typical link in the supply chain and analyze its internal operations. These operations, along with the flow of material through the organization (the link in the chain of organizations), the flow of information, and the decision-making processes, transform the link’s input (raw materials, parts, subassemblies, or even finished goods from suppliers) into the link’s output, that is, the goods and services that the organization/link provides to its customers.
