ABSTRACT
It is estimated that hundreds of billions of ton(ne)s of topsoil are lost due to erosion annually [9.1] and that the loss of soil outstrips its regeneration by 10-40 times [9.2]. It is partly responsible for the degradation of aquatic habitat and the deterioration of drinking water supplies. A s ignificant portion of the erosion is caused by poor low-volume road design and construction. However, it is a problem that can be mitigated with good design and construction.
