6.1.1 Overview
Regulations, codes, and standards (RCS) establish requirements for safety and environmental compliance, as well as the interchangeability of products and services. RCS may also prescribe relevant test methods to verify compliance to these requirements. In doing so, RCS are important in ensuring safety, encouraging commercialization, and removing technical barriers to trade. While often treated synonymously or referred to together in North America, there is a clear distinction between a regulation, a code, and a standard.
