ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the state of the art in the field of business models. During the 1960s there were a number of discussions concerning the interrelationships among strategy, organizational structure and technologies from a business model perspective. The term business model suggests a sophisticated and structured approach to business, one that is at the heart of business success. Business model research is also prominent in fields outside of business and management, such as practical entrepreneurship, production and technology, sustainability. It suggests that a recipe for success can be taken from an organization— such as Apple, Amazon, Facebook or Twitter— and applied to other organizations, bringing similar success.
