ABSTRACT

The clever design of experiments is the creation of a logical space around the things under investigation. In the world of “normal” science, experimentation is a highly standardised and clearly marked practice, which relies on canons that indeed make the science normal. The use of single observers under uncontaminated conditions is proper when one wants to study problems where the units of analysis have been arbitrarily carved out by experimenters who take it for granted they are studying the kind of topic for which very small units of analysis are appropriate. The subject-matter of Experimental Phenomenology is things, not individual differences, or perhaps, an ideal brain which is not that of any individual participant in one study or other. The interaction between observers leads to an outcome which is most likely different from the average of the descriptions contained in data collected from individual participants; this could easily be tested.
