ABSTRACT

Coaching, counselling and psychotherapy are all talking activities. This chapter looks at some of the similarities and differences and explores the validity of distinctions made in the attempt to create difference and a new market place for each. In tracing the history of these activities the chapter also examines what it is that works and definitional questions as well as the evidence base for each activity. In conclusion, the author suggests that more work needs to be done to create market closure within the coaching industry and also a more substantial evidence base needs to be built to put it on a par with counselling and psychotherapy.
