ABSTRACT

A capability framework encourages students to include a consideration of self in their development planning. Measuring capability is harder than measuring competence, but there are people out there experimenting with new approaches. This model defines capability as comprising four qualities. The four qualities are skills, or competence, mental flexibility and self-reflection, conceptual thinking and Commitment to self-development. Assessors are looking not only at the coach's skills, but at their depth and breadth of coaching knowledge, commitment to development, and capacity for critical self-reflection. Experienced coaches know that multiple approaches to coaching exist. These coaches may find themselves bumping up against competency frameworks, which seek to define single best approaches to coaching. However, continuing to debate what constitutes effective coaching solely in terms of skills may be somewhat futile. Many in the industry argue that there is a big difference between being able to exercise coaching skills, and being a good coach.
