ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces core issues in the book, beginning with a description of how three different media vividly covered the scourge of racial prejudice in America in different ways, in this way highlighting the diverse, fragmented nature of news in a digital age. Emphasizing the importance of news, introducing contemporary problems that plague it, and offering a rich tour of the historical changes and continuities in news over the centuries, the chapter foregrounds news and journalism, spotlighting issues that are discussed in the ensuing chapters.
