ABSTRACT

Setting the stage with an example of the #MeToo-instigating exposés of celebrity male sexual harassment, this chapter systematically describes the routines that lie at the heart of contemporary news. The first section explains classic news values, such as novelty, threats to the social order, conflict, and dramatization, along with contemporary values associated with online news, like immediacy and interactivity. The next section offers a full-court press discussion of key routines, such as formal channels, information subsidies, official sources, and leaks, with classic examples, discussion of strengths, shortcomings, and legal implications. Internet and social media routines, like crowdsourcing and tweeting, are discussed, evaluated, and placed in the larger context of the normative purposes of journalism.
