ABSTRACT

P. Stephenson and D. Smith in their study on bullying in North-East England, found that bullying was frequently more of a problem in some schools than others. This would seem to indicate that the attitude towards the problem is crucial. The children and teachers discuss why children are bullies and what can be done to help them. There has been considerable success in stopping school bullying by peer pressure through the KIDSCAPE programme. In the United Kingdom the KIDSCAPE programmes in schools for 3 to 5 year olds and 6 to 11 year olds are designed to protect children from a variety of dangers, including bullying, abduction, getting lost and possible sexual abuse. The problem of bullying is dealt with by involving the parents, teachers and children in discussions and roleplaying positive strategies to deal with bullying. Bullying takes many forms - verbal abuse, emotional badgering, physical attack, sexual harrassment.
