ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the thoughtful organisation of space for active learners by looking at the practical details of interest areas, storage and materials. It highlights the hallmarks of labelling, accessible storage, a balance of commercial and free and found materials and display seen in HighScope settings, and how similar principles apply in the outdoor learning environment and settings for under-threes. The use of space is exemplified by descriptions of two visits to HighScope settings, one to an under-threes unit in a purpose-built preschool and one to a preschool room in a Victorian house.
