ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the positive impact of active learning as the central principle of the HighScope curriculum, to which every other element interrelates and interconnects. It addresses the theories supporting active learning, including those of Piaget, Erikson, Vygotsky and Isaacs; and how HighScope has applied theory concisely to all areas of practice, using the five ingredients of active learning. Finally, it looks at the KDIs, which are readily apparent in children’s active learning and form the HighScope curriculum content.
