ABSTRACT

The current chapter presents the major educational ideologies and beliefs concerning the ‘right’ purposes, structures, and processes of education, in general, and of teaching and learning, in particular, in the developing world. It discusses traditional conceptualizations of the school and the teacher’s role, the position of students, and the historical place of the local community in education. Thus, by analyzing African and Asian educational ideologies such as Confucianism, Islam, Buddhism, and indigenous African, the chapter undermines current beliefs in a unified, universal way of education and schooling as well as sets the stage for the initiation of education reforms that embraces traditional educational knowledge and beliefs.
