ABSTRACT

Building a curriculum for autistic girls that enables them to thrive should include constant opportunities to communicate and to deconstruct the communication of others. Many autistic girls are articulate and able to reflect on their thoughts and feelings well but this takes lots of time and practice. The bedrock of a whole-school culture that celebrates autistic girls is awareness and understanding. In places like school or college or work autistic girls and women are often surrounded by people who really do not get them. There has been an increased awareness in the medical profession that autistic girls present very differently to boys, with anxiety being an over-riding emotion. Teachers use specialist interests as the motivator, and reward the girls for trying things that they clearly have no interest in. Once a skill has been practiced a few times in one setting, then teachers try to transfer the activity to another setting to help the girls generalize the skill.
