ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the European Higher Education Area framework for higher education. It outlines the individual academic can look at their own research career to ways of introducing research into the curriculum for students so that the resulting work can be both exciting and useful for both parties. Many supervisors want their students to become ‘independent researchers’, and for most students that is too much to ask at the beginning. Transferable skills are important to the individual research student for their future employability. The number of research students an academic is allowed to take on is a difficult issue to make guidelines for. Students have undertaken a wide range of research projects, often with the aim of encouraging independent investigation and fostering a deep engagement with learning. Students doing research at bachelor’s or master’s level suffer much less from the isolation that can be found when researching at a doctoral level. This chapter also provides an overview of this book.
