ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some aspects of supervising across different cultures. It purposes the elements are expressed as binaries, but in some ways this risks creating a false dichotomy, so readers are encouraged to use these binaries as a launch pad for a discussion, rather than viewing them as absolutes. The chapter looks at some aspects of supervising across different cultures, the role and position that the supervisor might take, supervising groups of students and focusing on key transitions between levels of study and within levels of study. Research students and their supervisors come from different educational, social and linguistic backgrounds. The significance of Grant’s work is that she focuses on the role of the supervisor or advisor in a culturally sensitive way and enables the supervisor to make conscious choices about how they want to manage any cultural gap between the student and a Western doctorate.
