ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and how the framework can be used to explore different stages of managing the research process. It explores how working at the boundaries and combining approaches can substantially help supervisors and their students make significant progress. The chapter includes two short questionnaires which academics and students respectively can use to explore their own preferences further. It looks specifically at identifying and managing mental health problems among students doing research. A common problem for supervisors, particularly in the early stages of a research project, is how to help the student who is not thinking at the right level. The academic who is giving feedback from the enculturation approach will be encouraging the student to see their work as disciplinary colleagues might view it. The importance of a more equal power relationship becomes apparent when we look at independence in the relationship development approach.
