ABSTRACT

Course-based study abroad often takes faculty to new places within their own university as well as around the world. While the University bears responsibility for virtually all administrative, legal, financial, management, and logistical aspects of the endeavors, quite frequently they lack a streamlined process for handling course-based travel. In many institutions, the support and expertise described later may not exist and faculty will be left to coordinate the various aspects of course-based study abroad. The first thing students will want to investigate on their campus is who and which office is responsible for course-based study abroad experiences. Probably the most important institutional responsibility is the administrative support provided for all aspects of the trip. The best faculty leaders are flexible, good-natured, disciplined, mature, responsible, and able to think on their feet. The university must be responsible for billing for the trip as well as collecting the funds from students.
