ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly considers the epistemology of science, the difference between data-driven and theoretically-driven theories and models and whether the pursuit of truth is or is not the overarching goal of explanatory communication research. The beginnings, the growth, and the retirement of the LC4MP are described and a commentary on the extent to which it continues to be conditionally true explanatory science is offered. Finally, LC4MP is compared to DHCCST and an argument is made that explanatory communication science is likely not going to succeed in finding significant numbers of true answers as long as it is based on the assumptions of linear causality and reductionism.
