ABSTRACT

In all cultures people report past events, and the receptive skills of listening and reading are well exercised in recreational contexts when we turn to the reading of fictitious or factual narrative. The ability to report events both in speech and writing is an important productive skill, and the teaching of narrative will occupy a significant place in most ELT programmes. In this section we are going to look at ways of teaching students to write narrative at both elementary and advanced levels, and with reference to both personal and institutional writing.
