ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the involvement of parents in the teaching of children with specific reading difficulties who are admitted on a short-term basis to Mowbray School. Mowbray School was purpose-built to accommodate children with a wide range of special educational needs. Mowbray School aims to develop a partnership with all parents in the education of their children. It was recognised that parental involvement would be especially important if rapid progress was to be made and maintained with children on a short-term placement. The majority of schools have reported satisfaction with the placement and reintegration. Most of the children are reported as making good use of their reading and joining in classroom activities with their peers. Children are identified as having specific reading difficulties by the special education advisory service and educational psychologists. All children identified are then tested using the placement test for the Corrective Reading Programme.
