ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly explains the purpose of the four-phase project and the precise requirements of the parents’ involvement. This four-phase project, based at the Kings Heath Child Advisory and Psychological Service, Birmingham, was carried out over a period of more than two years during which time 46 children and their families participated. The record sheets were returned to school every Monday morning in order to note parents' and children's responses to the programme. The nine children included in the project were tested at the outset of the five-week period by the head of the Remedial Department using Form 'B' of the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability. The main reason for adopting the variation of Paired Reading was that a short pilot using two children on the Morgan and Lyon method indicated that the error rate was very high when the reading material, chosen by the child primarily for interest, was difficult.
