ABSTRACT

Fox Hill Nursery and First School is in the middle of a large council estate on the north side of Sheffield. The area has a significant rate of unemployment and there are many one-parent families. The school qualifies for the Education Priority Area Allowance. The staff of the school is committed to parental involvement. The reading workshops and reading at home have three-fold benefits, for parents, teachers and children alike. The parents were asked to take part in a variety of reading activities with their own child such as listening to their child read, playing reading games together, helping with a sound sheet, talking about books and pictures and looking at books. The parents came into school for one hour each week to 'work' alongside their child in the classroom. The children enjoy working alongside their parents and they all look forward to 'workshop'.
