ABSTRACT

The outstanding candidate can move with ease through any of the five approaches, combining and adopting them as best suits the individual student and the situation they are in. This chapter looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and how the framework can be used to explore different stages of managing the research process (from designing a research project to preparing for assessment or final examination). It then examines two common dilemmas in more detail: using the framework to support the student’s movement towards independence and helping the student to conceptualise at the right level. The issue of whether each approach can encourage creativity is addressed. The framework can be used to explore the questions that were raised in the first chapter, and there are some examples here of that being done.
