ABSTRACT

The children discussed in groups what they were intending to write about and they drew outlines in picture form to show clearly the sequence of events involved. A word-bank which had been compiled in the course of the project from the teacher's and children's suggestions was also available. To help children to learn effectively, the teacher must allow them adequate time to work at their difficulties and to achieve the satisfaction of a sense of success in completing the task that has been set. The teacher who reads a child's draft needs to be able to help the pupil to overcome perceived difficulties and to develop and improve as a writer. Examining adequate and inadequate examples of writing and becoming more aware of the differences between them helps children to internalise these standards and apply them to their own writing.
