ABSTRACT

Patch carried out a study comparing the effectiveness of paired reading and pause, prompt and praise with a group of children who had been statemented as having special educational needs. Leach and Siddall compared several strategies for helping children with their reading with parents acting as the tutors. Several researchers have made attempts to compare different modes of peer-tutoring in order to see which is most effective. Combinations of male tutors with male tutees did best in this analysis whereas female pairings while producing good outcomes for the tutees were much less successful for the tutors. Ainsborough set up an experimental study in order to examine the effects of sex pairing for pause, prompt and praise tutoring. Wheldall and Entwistle set out to investigate the effectiveness of teacher modelling on the process of silent reading in class, following up some earlier work done in New Zealand.
