ABSTRACT

The tutors who have volunteered to help need some additional incentive apart from their desire to assist someone who is less fortunate than themselves. Tutors should be responsible for keeping account of which book is being read, the pages completed at each tutoring session and any particular difficulties encountered. Tutors must be instructed not to be critical of tutees' attempts to make sense of the text as this is completely counter-productive and may lead to their giving up altogether. When we set up our training course in pause, prompt and praise for teachers we first taught them to use the procedures themselves and required them to carry out a programme with a child who had been making poor progress in reading. A training video may be obtained from the Paired Learning Project.
