ABSTRACT

Senior School girls seem to be more generally given to periodical reading than Senior School boys, whereas the Secondary School girls cultivate the habit less than the Secondary School boys. The magazines have been put into three large groups, as were those read by boys. Two of the more popular amongst girls are described as follows by the Writers' and Artists' Year Book: 'Its contents include serials and short stories of feminine appeal; articles dealing with timely subjects, and a house and home section.' Woman's Companion, which appears high in the Senior School girls' list of the most popular magazines, and not at all in the Secondary list, is 'devoted entirely to married women's interests'. A comparison of the boys' and girls' lists of the most popular magazines reveals marked differences. There are no women's magazines in the boys' lists, nor do the boys give as much patronage to the Picturegoer and Film Pictorial.
